Excerpt - Heat Level PG13
Archer hooked an arm around Leslie as he walked her out of the Wild Beat. The girls’ night had finally broken up, and the others started to go home. They’d finally been able to coax their mate out of the bar. Not that the night had been bad.
Talking with Jason and Tony had been great, and dancing with Leslie had made his evening. During the night, her muscles had relaxed, and now a soft smile curved his mate’s mouth. The time with her friends and telling them everything she’d been keeping to herself had lifted a weight off her.
Apparently, it had been quite a night. The women had laughed and drank. None of them came away drunk, but the liquor had relaxed them. They’d also stayed much longer than he expected.
Other people slowly made their way across the parking lot, as well. Cars started and pulled out. People piled into taxis, and the vehicles pulled out of the parking lot. His gaze moved over anyone close to them. Probably a little paranoia, but she was too important to risk.
They stepped into the shadows between the wide circle from the parking lot lights. His muscles tensed, and his heartbeat pounded. When they stepped out into the glowing light, he rolled his shoulders. Get control.
They strolled across the parking lot. The low hum of a motor broke the near silence. Archer turned his head. No bright lights flared, not even the red glow of the brake lights.
“How about we stop for some ice cream on the way home?” Leslie tugged at his hand.
“Sounds good. It will have to be a store. I’m pretty sure that all the restaurants and shops are closed by now.” Judge glanced back at her.
She grinned. “A little carton or two of ice cream suits me.”
“We can get you a couple of those and me the ingredients for a jumbo banana split.” Judge aimed for their car.
Archer mouth watered. Bananas, chocolate, strawberries, and nuts. Yum. He nodded. Maybe they could alter the plans a little. Smearing some of the ingredients from that sweet treat on Leslie and licking it off her might make it even better.
She’d go wild as they cleaned fudge off her with their mouths. Hell, he might leave the ice cream at the store and simply get the fudge, whip cream, and bananas. The creamy whipped topping, sweet fruit, and thick fudge would taste even better with the salty tang of her skin. Driving her wild and feeding his sweet tooth at the same time, such a wonderful combination.
A motor revved. The rumbling sound broke the night. He glanced around and behind them, but nothing moved, and no lights came on.
“What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream, Leslie?” He leaned close to her.
The motor roared again. He glanced behind them. The car was somewhere there. Hair stood on the back of Archer’s neck. Something was wrong.
Tires squealed as they fought for purchase on the asphalt. Fuck. Not good.
“It’s called Double Chocolate Sin and Crunch. It’s chocolate ice crea—” Leslie squeaked. Her voice cut off.
Archer’s arm tightened, and he wrenched her to the side.

#BookTour ~ #Win a #GiftCard Hunted Soldier (Shadow Unit Book 3) by @JamieLynnAuthor

Hunted Soldier (Shadow Unit Book 3)

The hunters become the hunted when the past returns to haunt Sergeants Connor Finley and Shawn Weller with deadly vengeance.

In the wake of the harrowing missions in India and Pakistan, Connor struggles to come to terms with causing the accidental death of a child, while Shawn tries to put Julian’s betrayal behind him.

Adding to the emotional fallout, new trials arise - the appearance of a young man from Connor’s past turned stalker may have fatal consequences for him, while Shawn must confront his former heroin addiction and break free of the hold it still has on him.

The challenges continue when a Shadow Unit undercover op in Bangladesh to shut down the pipeline of terrorists being smuggled into the UK draws Shawn and Connor into a web of lies and deceit from a man hell bent on exacting revenge on the two soldiers - demanding a life for a life.

Will Connor and Shawn survive? Or will the jungle become their final resting place?
Don't miss Connor and Shawn's previous missions in BROKEN SOLDIER and ROGUE SOLDIER, plus the holiday short story SNOWBOUND SOLDIERS! Available now!

EXCERPT:
Shawn had been correct in his one assumption—the break in the tree line was not natural. The jungle had indeed been artificially cut back. But what he couldn't see in the semi-darkness from his perch in the tree was the eight-foot tall chain link fence that stretched for as far as Shawn and Connor could see. The area they had been dropped in, the booby-trapped expanse they'd been traversing, was no open piece of jungle. This was a private killing ground.
The escape route looked easy. Too easy. Just climb up and over the fence to freedom. Shawn and Connor approached the fence cautiously, both of them too well trained to take anything at face value, and Shawn felt the fine hairs on his arm stand up, sensing the hidden danger—an electric current running through the fence. Connor must have sensed it, too, as he shot Shawn a look.
"Knife," he said.
Shawn withdrew it from his pocket and flicked it open. He and Connor took a few steps back and Shawn tossed the knife at the fence. As soon as it made contact sparks flew from the metal, confirming their suspicions.
Shawn retrieved his knife and they immediately searched for another way over the fence. But their enemy had been clever—he had cut the trees back far enough from the fence so no one could climb out on one of the branches and jump off, clearing the top of the fence.
"Fuck!" Shawn cursed again, raking a hand back through his hair. "This asshole's thought of everything, hasn't he?"
"We don’t have a choice now. We have to make it back to the compound," Connor said.
"We'll stay close to the outside of the tree line so we don’t run across any other booby traps in the jungle," Shawn replied. "Then–"
The rest of his words abruptly cut off at the sound of gunshots ringing out, shattering the quiet. Shawn and Connor dropped into a crouch, Shawn's heart rate accelerating as adrenaline flooded through his body. They were out of time. The hunt had begun.
Without discussion, he and Connor moved as one back into the jungle, away from the direction the shots had come from, but still toward the compound. Plan A was now off the table. They couldn't be caught in the open running along the tree line. They would be picked off like ducks in a shooting gallery. The deadly jungle offered their only concealment.
Shawn knew they were moving too fast, but at this point they had to. Another volley of shots rang out and Shawn chanced picking up the pace. He instantly knew it was the wrong decision as he felt his left foot come down on the hidden pressure plate.
His combat-honed reflexes kicked in as the double row of bamboo spikes sprang up from their ground cover camouflage, heading straight for his chest. He violently twisted his body to the side, trying desperately to get out of the path of the deadly projectiles, just as Connor grabbed his arm and jerked him away.
Their combined effort saved Shawn's life, but they weren't fast enough to move him completely out of harm's way, and two of the spikes tore into and across Shawn's right side. Off balance, they both tumbled and hit the ground hard. Shawn gnashed his teeth together to keep from crying out at the intense pain and giving away their location.
Shawn clamped his hand to his injured side, feeling the warm blood coat his fingers as Connor rolled him onto his back, his partner also grimacing from the hard landing that must have further aggravated his cracked rib.
Connor pushed at Shawn's torn shirt, trying to look at Shawn's wound. "Move your hand, Shawn, let me see…"
"Oh, fuck, that hurts," Shawn ground out as Connor probed cautiously with his fingers. "How bad is it?"
Connor quickly removed his long sleeved outer shirt and tore it into strips. "They gouged pretty deep. But it doesn't look like they penetrated far enough to do internal damage."
Shawn bit down on his lip as Connor swiftly and efficiently bandaged his wounds with the strips from his shirt. "Well, I did say I'd take the next injury. You're welcome," he cracked, trying to grin through the pain.
Connor grinned back, tying off the last of the bandages. "That was big of you, mate, but what say we call it even now?"
"I'd say that sounds like a great idea," Shawn groaned, then held his bloody hand out to Connor. "Now help me up."

STORY EXCERPT
Kos and Rite stepped into the ship. Mitch followed them. He watched their every move. They kept their hands at their sides. Dean took them to the rec room. He pointed to the table and the two chairs around it. They had extra seating, but didn’t think they’d need it. This meeting shouldn’t take long.
“Now, tell us how you knew our location and what you’re after. Don’t expect us to believe you’re here to help. You work for another company. They wouldn’t approve.” Dean leaned against the wall and folded his arms across his chest.
“We are here to help. The company we work for has nothing to do with it. We’re hunting a bounty for them. That’s all they care about. We found someone to hunt here because Grant asked us to be here to back you up.” Kos stopped near the table but didn’t take a seat.
Mitch couldn’t be happier that his mask hid his face. His mouth hung open. How the hell did they know his father’s name?
“‘Grant’ is supposed to mean something to us?” Dean’s voice sounded calm and void of any recognition of the name.
“You know your father’s name. You are also aware he’s the man who co-owns the company you work for.” Rite shook his head. “Don’t be such a suspicious ass. We may have enjoyed giving you a little trouble in the past, but this is something else entirely. We found you because he’s worried about you. Nothing more.”
“And why would you care if he’s worried?” Mitch voiced the question that kept popping into his head. His father had never spoken of Kos and Rite. How did they know him?
“Because he’s one of the few men I respect. Give me a moment. When you see who we are, it will explain everything.” Kos reached up to the fastenings that secured his mask.
That didn’t look like it could be ripped off. If he thought it necessary to secure it against being taken off by others, Kos would key the fastenings to his DNA or biorhythms. Mitch used a similar method on his mask.
From what Kos said, they knew these people by sight. Who could it be? Mitch couldn’t think of one person who had the build and short stature to be either of those two.
The person didn’t take off the mask like he expected them to. Kos grabbed the mask and pulled out and then up. A full head mask came with it. He hadn’t realized. With the mask on, it looked like the person had blond hair, but as it came off, the disguise became apparent. He frowned. The mask hid more than he’d thought. The stocking-like bottom finally cleared the head. A braid fell out first. The long black hair stymied him, but it could be why the person wore a hood. Some people would use long hair as a means of control on them.
The hood finally pulled free, revealing pale creamy skin. His gaze traced over soft curves of a delightfully rounded face. Recognition slammed through him.
“Brigitte!” Mitch took a step forward. He hadn’t expected to see her. Hell, he hadn’t known she’d started bounty hunting.
She had the training. Everyone in both of their families trained for the business, but she’d walked away from the Astral Hunters years ago. He looked at the person standing beside Brigitte. Since Brigitte stood there, the person beside her had to be Aileen. Most of the time, those two jumped into trouble together.
“Now, you know why your father thought we’d be interested in watching your back.” Brigitte put her mask down on the table.
“Is that Aileen?” Dean asked.
“Yeah, it’s me.” Aileen removed her mask. “I knew if Dad worried, he had a reason.”
Mitch shrugged. He didn’t know what worried his father. They’d handled multiple captures before, but his father’s doubt in their abilities didn’t hold his attention at the moment. Brigitte had all of it with her mere presence.
“Yeah, seems he doesn’t think you two are working so well together lately. Plus, there are a couple of your marks he’s afraid are going to team up together. He wants you to have someone watching your back.” Brigitte caught Aileen’s mask as it sailed through the air.
He hesitated. He’d said a lot of hurtful things to her. Well, both he and Dean had. They’d been stunned and off-balance. They shouldn’t have believed her brother, Carter’s, accusation. He wished they could avoid the more awkward part, but they did need to apologize for giving her such a bad time.
“You said you had a bounty to hunt and you wouldn’t be stealing from us. Who are you after?” Mitch asked. Nothing like avoiding the issue, but he didn’t want to see the smile wiped away from Brigitte’s curved lips.
“Our mark isn’t your style. You go for the violent criminals. We knew the white-collar criminal we’re after wouldn’t be on your list. Part of why we picked her.” Brigitte shrugged.
“And the other part?” Dean asked.
“The fucking huge bounty.” Aileen grinned. “If we can get her, we’ll have a nice chunk to play with even after the company gets its piece.”
